AFCON Winner Victor Moses Breaks Silence on Shock Nigeria Retirement

Former Super Eagles winger Victor Moses has opened up on his decision to retire from international football at the age of 27, saying he stepped aside to create opportunities for younger players in the national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Moses, a key member of Nigeria’s victorious 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad, announced his retirement from international football in 2018 shortly after representing the country at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

His decision came as a surprise to many football fans, particularly as he was still competing at the highest level in European football at the time.

Speaking during an interview with Pulse Sports Editor-in-Chief Joba Ogunwale at the Famous CFC Watch Party in Lagos, Moses said the depth of talent within the Super Eagles influenced his choice to step away.

“Nigeria had a lot of talent, and there were many players in the Super Eagles squad during the time I left. I felt it was important for other players to have their opportunity,” he said.

The former Chelsea FC star stressed that his retirement was not driven by a loss of passion for representing Nigeria, but rather by a sense of satisfaction with what he achieved during his international career.

“I loved playing for Nigeria and I truly enjoyed every moment. Winning the AFCON in 2013 and playing at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups were unforgettable experiences,” Moses added.

“I made great friends in the Super Eagles and created special memories. It wasn’t about abandoning Nigeria; it was about appreciating everything I experienced during my time with the team.”

Moses scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for the Super Eagles and remains widely regarded as one of the most influential Nigerian players of his generation.

At club level, he enjoyed spells with Wigan Athletic, Crystal Palace FC and several European clubs, but gained widespread acclaim during his time at Chelsea under Antonio Conte.

Operating as a right wing-back, Moses played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Premier League title-winning campaign in 2017 and their FA Cup triumph in 2018.
