AFN Announces Selection Criteria For Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced the criteria for selection of athletes to next month’s World Athletics Championships holding in Tokyo, Japan, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a statement signed by the Secretary-General of AFN, Israel Inwang, only athletes who have qualified by Entry Standard or who are ranked 1-20 in World Ranking Quota will be selected for the World Championships.

Accordingly, the selection criteria which take immediate effect would ensure that only committed athletes represent Nigeria at international competitions, promote team spirit and collective responsibility.

The statement charges all stakeholders to ensure full compliance with the directives and that the AFN remains committed to supporting dedicated athletes who demonstrate both athletic excellence and professional conduct.

AFN, in the statement, insists that the federation remains committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism and discipline in Nigerian athletics.

The statement indicates further that athletes still have until August 24, 2025, to either qualify by Entry Standard or World Ranking and afterwards, the full Nigerian team list for the Tokyo 2025 will be published.
