The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled the official schedule for the national trials that will determine which athletes qualify to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a circular issued to stakeholders, the AFN detailed the event timings and competition format for the selection trials, marking a critical milestone in Nigeria’s preparation for the multi-sport event.

The federation emphasised that participation in the trials is mandatory for all athletes eyeing a spot on Team Nigeria.

Only performances recorded during the trials will be considered for final selection, the AFN stated.

“Strict compliance with the published timetable is required,” officials warned, adding that any absence or failure to compete could seriously jeopardise an athlete’s chances of making the national team.

The trials are expected to serve as the primary benchmark for assessing athletes’ current form and readiness as Nigeria assembles what is anticipated to be a highly competitive squad for Glasgow 2026.

Top track and field stars across the country are projected to converge for the event, turning it into a fierce battle for limited places in the national contingent.

The announcement comes as preparations intensify for Nigeria’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games, with the AFN positioning the trials as the definitive platform to identify athletes in peak condition.
