Abuja Hosts Inaugural ABA League As 40 Boys, Girls Teams Battle For Honours

All is set for the inaugural Amateur Basketball Academies (ABA) League, with 40 teams expected to compete in the pilot edition of the competition, which tips off on Saturday in Abuja, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

The maiden championship will feature 20 boys' and 20 girls' teams from basketball academies across the Federal Capital Territory and beyond. Matches will be played across four courts at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Basketball Courts, Package B, Abuja.

The opening-day fixtures promise an exciting start, with TNT Boys taking on Suleja Bulldog, while Smart Basketball Academy will face Tigers Basketball in the boys' category.

In the girls' competition, Queens Court will battle One Ball, while Dominion Basketball Academy will square up against Takers Basketball.

Speaking during a technical briefing for participating coaches in Abuja, ABA Technical Officer, Coach Adeka Daudu, disclosed that 14 matches would be played daily during the first week of the competition.

According to Daudu, the second week will be devoted to the knockout stages, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

He urged coaches and participating academies to approach the competition beyond the pursuit of victories, stressing that the league was primarily designed to identify and nurture young talents.

Daudu said the tournament would provide an avenue for player development, coaching improvement, discipline, teamwork and character building.

Also addressing the coaches during the technical session, President of the Amateur Basketball Academies, Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Aliyu Lucky Abubakar, stressed the importance of professionalism, cooperation and discipline to the success of the pilot edition.

Abubakar said the coaches had a responsibility that extended beyond producing basketball players, noting that they were also contributing to the development of responsible young Nigerians through sport.

“I therefore urge all coaches to work together, respect one another, respect officials, uphold the rules of the game, and place the interests of the young athletes above personal interests.

“Let this league become a model of fairness, excellence and unity,” he said.

He added that the coaches' meeting provided an opportunity to deliberate on technical standards, competition structure, player welfare, officiating, coaching ethics and other key areas required to deliver a successful pilot programme.

“Your contributions are valuable, and I encourage constructive engagement,” Abubakar added.

Several prominent personalities are expected to attend the opening ceremony, including the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko; Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi; Chairman of the FCT Basketball Association and Chairman of the FCT Sports Chairmen, Igwe Ifeanyi Eke; and Acting Director of Sports, FCT, Iyiola Ogundele.

The Inspector-General of Police, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service and Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority are also among dignitaries expected at the event.

The organisers said the pilot edition is intended to provide a structured platform for grassroots basketball development while creating opportunities for young players and coaches to gain competitive experience.
