22nd African Athletics Championship: Team Nigeria Finish In 3rd Position With 11 Medals

The 22nd edition of the African Athletics Championship came to a close on Sunday in Mauritius with Team Nigeria finishing in 3rd position, BSNsports.com.ng understand.


The events commenced on Wednesday with each of the participating countries scrambling to be on the medals table.


Team Nigeria are not left out and one of the high points of Nigeria's participation was Tobi Amusan retaining her title in 100 meters women hurdles by winning gold.


Sade Olatoye (Hammer throw) and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also clinched the gold medals for Nigeria.


Mike Edwards added to Nigeria's medals haul on the last day of the African Championships in Mauritius, winning a Silver medal in the men's High Jump. Edwards jumped 2.15m, but missed out from winning GOLD on countback.


Also on the last day both Nigeria teams won Bronze in 4x400m relays: the quartet of Deborah Oke, Queen Usunobun, Ella & Patience Okon George pipped Botswana to 3rd place, while Johnson Nnamani, Chidi Okezie, Adeyemi Sikiru & Emmanuel Ojeli got round the baton to also win Bronze in the men's category.


The final table released by the organiser indicated that Team Nigeria finished in 3rd position with 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze behind Kenya with 10 gold, 5 Silver and 8 bronze while South Africa has 9 gold, 13 sillver and bronze 14.
