African Football Leaders To Converge In Nigeria For 2026 CAF Assembly

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has picked Nigeria as the host of its 2026 Ordinary General Assembly (OGA), the organisation’s highest decision-making forum, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The CAF Ordinary General Assembly, held once a year, brings together representatives of the continent’s 54 member associations to review the state of African football and set strategic priorities for the season ahead. Key decisions taken at the forum shape competitions, development programmes and the overall direction of the game across Africa.

During the Assembly, CAF will review reports on its competitions, adopt the organisation’s budget and audited financial accounts, deliberate on statutory matters and agree on policy directions aimed at advancing football development on the continent.

The 2026 gathering will mark the 48th edition of the CAF Ordinary General Assembly. The most recent edition was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and was chaired by CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe.

Although the exact date and venue are yet to be announced, however, plans have been concluded for Nigeria to serve as host nation. 

The development was confirmed to BSN Sports by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, who stated that Nigeria will host the Assembly, with further details to be communicated in due course.

Beyond the main plenary session, the event is expected to feature a series of zonal meetings and official engagements, effectively turning Nigeria into the hub of African football administration for several days.

Observers have described the hosting of the 2026 CAF Ordinary General Assembly as strategically significant, coming in the same year as the Nigeria Football Federation’s Elective Congress, scheduled for September 2026.

What to Expect on the Agenda

While the full agenda will be formally circulated to member associations, the CAF Ordinary General Assembly traditionally addresses a wide range of key issues, including:

Reports on CAF competitions across men’s, women’s and youth categories, with assessments of recent tournaments and qualification campaigns.

Updates on development initiatives, covering technical programmes, refereeing, infrastructure and club licensing.

Reviews of commercial and broadcast performance, alongside strategic priorities for the next cycle.

Statutory matters, including proposed amendments to regulations.

Approval of audited financial statements and adoption of the budget for the forthcoming year.
