Again! Nigeria Misses World Cup Back To Back As DR Congo Pick African Ticket For Playoffs
Sampson Adedeji
The Democratic Republic of Congo has ended Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for next year’s FIFA World Cup, claiming a dramatic 4-3 victory on penalty shootouts, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Nigeria looked on course for victory after taking an early lead through an own goal, but DR Congo fought back strongly and levelled just before halftime through Ella.
With both sides unable to find a winner in regulation and extra time, the tense encounter proceeded to penalties. The two-time African champions, Nigeria, faltered in the final round of the shootout, allowing DR Congo to seal their qualification and send shockwaves through African football.
The result means the Super Eagles will miss out on another World Cup appearance, while DR Congo celebrates a historic achievement. DR Congo will represent Africa at the FIFA Interncontinental playoff in Mexico in March, 2026.
