Akwuegbu Impressed By Iheanacho’s Form, Pushes For National Team Comeback
By BSN Sports
Former Nigerian international Ben Akwuegbu has called for the immediate recall of Kelechi Iheanacho to the Super Eagles squad ahead of next month’s Super Cup in London, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Super Eagles are set to defend their title at the 2026 tournament, scheduled to run from May 26 to 30. Akwuegbu’s appeal follows his recent trip to Scotland, where he watched Iheanacho feature for Celtic F.C. at Celtic Park.
Impressed by the forward’s performance, Akwuegbu highlighted Iheanacho’s current form, noting his growing influence in Celtic’s attacking play. The 29-year-old has contributed both goals and assists as Celtic continue their pursuit of league leaders Heart of Midlothian F.C. in the Scottish Premiership.
“It was a delight to watch Iheanacho in action,” Akwuegbu said. “He is playing with confidence, contributing significantly, and showing clear improvement. I believe he deserves an immediate recall to the national team as they prepare for the Super Cup. His combination with players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze would pose a serious threat to any defence.”
Iheanacho was notably omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the last Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third.
Since joining Celtic from Sevilla FC in 2025, Iheanacho has played a key role in the club’s title challenge. Celtic currently sit second on the league table with 70 points, just behind Hearts on 73, as the season approaches its conclusion.
Nigeria will head into the Super Cup as defending champions but face competition from teams including India, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Akwuegbu also commended Ibrahim Gusau, president of the Nigeria Football Federation, for his efforts to develop football across all levels in the country, including the national teams and domestic leagues such as the NPFL, NNL, and NLO.
