Akwuegbu Urges Governor To Retain Plateau United GM Amid Management Shake-up
By Precious Oham
Former Super Eagles forward and current Consultant to Plateau United, Ben Akwuegbu, has appealed to the Plateau State Government to reconsider its reported decision to dissolve the current management team of the club ahead of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Recent reports indicate that the state government is planning a shake-up within the club’s leadership, ostensibly to bring in fresh perspectives. However, Akwuegbu believes such a move at this critical stage could destabilize the team’s progress.
Speaking to BSNSports.com.ng, Akwuegbu expressed confidence in the abilities of the existing management, particularly the General Manager, whom he praised for his leadership and understanding of the team’s dynamics.
"I am appealing to the governor to allow the current General Manager to continue," Akwuegbu said. "He knows the team, the terrain, and has built a working relationship with the players. Replacing him now would be counterproductive because a new person would need time to adapt and understand the system."
He added that the team finished the previous season on a strong note and highlighted the risks of disrupting that momentum.
"A lot of people may be advising the governor to change the management, but I don't support it. The General Manager is performing well, and Plateau United remain the top team in the North. A new appointment now could derail the club's ambitions."
Plateau United is aiming to build on its recent performances and compete strongly in the upcoming NPFL season, making stability at the managerial level a crucial component of their plans.
Plateau United ended in 7th position in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League season with 54 points just one point behind 6th-placed Enyimba FC.
