Al Ahly Threaten To Opt Out Of Confederation Cup If...

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC are considering pulling out of the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup if they finish third in the Egyptian Premier League at the end of the season on May 20, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Red Devils are currently battling for a top-two finish which guarantees qualification for the CAF Champions League, but club officials are reportedly reluctant to participate in Africa’s secondary club competition should they fail to secure a Champions League ticket.

Sources close to the club revealed that Al Ahly believe participation in the Confederation Cup does not align with the stature and ambitions of the Cairo-based side, who remain one of the most successful clubs in African football history.

Despite the stance on the Confederation Cup, the club is said to be open to featuring in the proposed African Football League if the competition is reintroduced by Confederation of African Football.

CAF launched the inaugural edition of the African Football League in 2023 with the aim of creating a premier continental club competition involving Africa’s elite teams. 

However, the tournament was not staged in 2024 or 2025 after facing scheduling and financial challenges.

Al Ahly are expected to make a final decision regarding their continental participation once the domestic league campaign concludes later this month.
