Al-Kholood manager Des Buckingham has expressed disappointment over the departure of former Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong, describing the Nigerian as an irreplaceable figure both on and off the pitch, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Troost-Ekong, who joined the Saudi Pro League side from Greek outfit PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a move to Qatari club Al Ahli SC during the January transfer window, bringing his short stint at Al-Kholood to an end.
Speaking at a press conference, Buckingham admitted that the club would struggle to fill the void left by the experienced centre-back.
“You can’t replace William, and I don’t want to replace him as a player or as a person,” Buckingham told reporters.
“There will be someone who comes in to take his place as a player.”
The Al-Kholood boss went on to heap further praise on the Nigerian international, highlighting his leadership qualities and influence within the squad.
“What I mean is, William is definitely the best leader I’ve ever worked with at this football club,” Buckingham said, adding that
Troost-Ekong played a significant role in helping him adapt to life at the club.
Troost-Ekong’s exit represents a major loss for Al-Kholood, with the club now expected to seek a suitable replacement as they continue their campaign in the Saudi Pro League.
