The Algerian Football Federation has reportedly made contact with Nigeria's Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, as it searches for a replacement for Vladimir Petkovic following the Desert Foxes' disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Petkovic's future has come under serious scrutiny after Algeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32, bringing an end to their hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

According to news outlet Footmercato, Chelle has emerged as one of the leading candidates after impressing with Nigeria.

The Franco-Malian tactician guided the Super Eagles to a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a result that reportedly strengthened his reputation among Algerian football officials.

The former Mali coach has earned praise for restoring discipline and tactical organisation to the Super Eagles since taking charge, making him an attractive option for the North African giants.

However, it remains unclear whether Chelle would be interested in leaving his role with Nigeria, with the Super Eagles still focused on upcoming international assignments.
