Algeria Set To Lodge Protest To CAF Against Nigeria, Referee

Algeria are set to formally submit a protest to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their quarterfinal defeat to Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to reports, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is unhappy with the officiating during the encounter and has compiled a series of complaints against Senegalese referee Issa Sy, who was in charge of the match.

The Algerian FA claim that a clear penalty was denied to their team, while several decisions taken during the game were questionable and allegedly favoured Nigeria. 

They further accused the referee of showing bias against the Desert Foxes throughout the contest.

In addition to the on-field decisions, Algeria also alleged that referee Issa Sy failed to shake hands with their players at full time, an action they described as unprofessional. 

The FAF also claimed that Nigerian players provoked Algerian officials and players after the final whistle.

The controversy reportedly extended beyond the pitch, with Algerian journalists and media professionals allegedly attacked in the tunnel area after the match.

As a result of these incidents, Algeria are expected to ask CAF to ban Issa Sy from the tournament and remove him from further officiating duties with immediate effect.

CAF is now expected to review the reports and available evidence before taking a decision on the matter.
