 Angola Football Association Announces Major Overhaul Of National Team Policy

The Angolan Football Association (FA) has announced sweeping reforms to its national team structure following the country’s disappointing performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a statement released on Monday, the federation confirmed what it described as “surgical operations” aimed at resetting the direction of Angolan football and restoring competitiveness at the international level.

Central to the new policy is a significant adjustment in player recruitment, with the FA revealing that only 25 players from the diaspora will be eligible for national team call-ups going forward. 

The decision marks a clear shift away from heavy reliance on foreign-based players.

The Angolan FA also disclosed plans to place stronger emphasis on the development of the domestic league and lower divisions, identifying grassroots football as a critical foundation for future success. 

As part of the reforms, home-based players are expected to play a more prominent role in national team competitions.

According to the federation, the overhaul is anchored on a long-term vision that prioritises youth development, sustainability, and a clear footballing identity tailored to Angola’s local realities.

The FA believes the reforms will not only strengthen the national team but also stimulate growth within the domestic football ecosystem, ensuring a steady pipeline of talent for years to come.
