Another Ex-Super Eagles Defender Slumps, Dies Days After Onigbinde, Henry Nwosu

Nigeria’s football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Green Eagles defender Lawrence Orairo, who reportedly collapsed on Sunday morning in Lagos, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to available information, the former international slumped while on a football field in the Kirikiri area of Lagos State. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later confirmed dead.

Orairo’s passing comes only days after the deaths of two other prominent figures in Nigerian football—former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde and ex-Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu—deepening the sense of loss within the country’s football fraternity.

During his playing career, Orairo was a member of the Nigerian national team, then known as the Green Eagles, representing the country in an era that helped lay the foundations for modern Nigerian football.

At club level, he featured for New Nigerian Bank Football Club of Benin City in Edo State, one of the prominent sides in Nigerian domestic football during the 1970s and 1980s. The club was originally founded as Ethiope FC in Sapele, Delta State, before relocating and rebranding.

During its peak years, the club produced several notable Nigerian internationals, including Bright Omokaro and the late Stephen Keshi, who later captained and coached the national team.

Orairo was widely regarded by teammates and contemporaries as a committed and disciplined player who contributed to the growth of club football in Nigeria during a formative period for the domestic league.

News of his death was first shared publicly by former Nigerian international Taiwo Oloyede on a WhatsApp platform on Sunday evening, prompting an outpouring of tributes from former teammates and members of the football community.

With Orairo’s passing, Nigerian football has lost another member of the generation of players who helped shape the country’s early international football identity.
