FIFA has announced a series of major decisions following its latest Council meeting, including the appointment of hosts for upcoming tournaments, updates to the international match calendar, and new proposals aimed at strengthening youth development in club football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Armenia and Georgia to Co-Host 2029 U-20 World Cup

The FIFA Council confirmed that Armenia and Georgia will jointly host the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2029™, marking the first time either nation will stage a tournament of this scale.

The decision reflects FIFA’s broader strategy to expand major competitions into emerging football regions and support infrastructure and talent development beyond traditional host nations.

Miami to Stage 2027 Women’s Champions Cup Finals

FIFA also announced that the United States will host the final phase of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup 2027™, with matches scheduled to take place in Miami from 27 to 31 January.

The governing body confirmed that competition regulations for the tournament have now been finalised, providing clarity on its format ahead of its inaugural edition.

Qatar Retains Key Role in Youth Competitions

The FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026™ will be staged in Qatar from 19 November to 13 December 2026.

The confirmation reinforces Qatar’s growing role as a regular host of international football events, particularly at youth level.

Continental Tournaments Shape 2027 Calendar

FIFA has incorporated several major continental competitions into the Men’s International Match Calendar, highlighting a congested global schedule in 2027. These include:

The AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia (7 January – 5 February)

The Concacaf Gold Cup (19 June – 11 July)

The CAF Africa Cup of Nations (19 June – 17 July)

The overlap of key tournaments is expected to place additional demands on players and clubs worldwide.

Presidential Election Timeline Announced

FIFA confirmed that its next presidential election, covering the 2027–2031 term, will be held during the 77th FIFA Congress in 2027.

The electoral process is set to begin on 30 April 2026, in accordance with FIFA statutes.

New Youth Player Rule Under Consideration

In a move aimed at promoting youth development, the FIFA Council has approved a consultation process on a proposed regulation requiring clubs to field at least one homegrown U-20 or U-21 player in senior matches.

The proposal remains under review and could be submitted for formal approval at a future Council meeting.
