Arokodare Starts Ajax Journey In Style With Debut Goal
By Niyi Busari
Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare enjoyed a dream start to his Ajax career after scoring on his debut in the Dutch club's 3-1 pre-season victory over FC Volendam at the Kras Stadion on Sunday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Nigerian striker, who was introduced in the 71st minute in place of Marcos Leonardo, completed the scoring by capitalising on a defensive error inside the Volendam penalty area after a miscued clearance.
Ajax had taken control of the contest earlier through goals from Anton Gaaei and Leonardo before Arokodare sealed the win with his first goal for the Amsterdam club.
The 25-year-old recently joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Eredivisie side retaining an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
His debut goal provides an encouraging start to life in Amsterdam following a turbulent end to his spell at Wolves. Arokodare arrived in England from Belgian side Racing Genk in a £24 million transfer in September 2025 after an impressive stint that produced 31 league goals in 79 appearances.
However, he struggled to make a similar impact in the Premier League, scoring just three goals in 33 appearances as Wolves suffered relegation to the Championship.
His departure from Molineux was also overshadowed by controversy after Wolves accused the striker of disrupting training during negotiations over his transfer. Arokodare rejected the allegations, insisting he had acted professionally throughout the process.
"Throughout my career, I have always taken great pride in conducting myself professionally and maintaining the highest training standards," he said in a statement posted on social media.
Ajax will hope Arokodare can rediscover the goalscoring form he displayed in Belgium as they prepare for the new campaign. The Dutch giants finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and are set to compete in the UEFA Conference League, subject to successfully navigating the qualifying play-offs.
