At 71, Ex-NFF Secretary-General Returns To University To Study Law

A former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Federation, Bolaji Ojo-Oba, has enrolled at the University of Ibadan to study law at the age of 71, joining 4,430 newly admitted students for the 2025/2026 academic session, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ojo-Oba was among the fresh students formally admitted during the university’s matriculation ceremony held on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, the septuagenarian said his decision to return to school was motivated by a long-standing ambition to study law.

“I have always had an interest in studying law, and now that I am less busy, I have decided to pursue my dream of studying law,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Kayode Adebowale, said the newly admitted students emerged from a highly competitive admission process.

According to him, a total of 46,916 candidates selected the university as their first-choice institution through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Adebowale explained that 4,171 candidates gained admission through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, while 259 others were admitted through the Direct Entry route, bringing the total number of newly admitted students to 4,430.

He noted that the figure represents approximately 9.4 percent of the total applicants, highlighting the competitive nature of admission into Nigeria’s premier university.

The vice-chancellor urged the new students to uphold the institution’s tradition of discipline, diligence and academic excellence throughout their academic journey.

Delivering the matriculation lecture titled “University Education: The Journey, The Gains and The Responsibilities,” the founder of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), Olusola Ayoola, encouraged the students to embrace hard work and personal responsibility in their studies.
