Athlete Welfare Takes Centre Stage as Council Overhauls Sports Policies

The National Council of Sports has approved new measures aimed at strengthening athlete insurance and restructuring national sporting events, following its meeting on Friday at the Kashim Shettima Hall, State Library Complex, Calabar, Cross River State, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a press statement issued at the end of the meeting, the Council highlighted the rising significance of emerging risks in sports and underscored the urgent need for comprehensive insurance coverage for athletes, officials, and sporting facilities during national competitions. It said enhanced insurance protection is essential for safeguarding participants and preserving the integrity of events across the country.

As part of its resolutions, the Council also approved a reduction in the number of events to be featured at the National Sports Festival, signalling a move toward a more streamlined and efficient festival structure.

According to the press release the National Sports Commission, working in collaboration with National Sports Federations and the Forum of State Directors of Sports, has been mandated to take necessary steps to implement the restructuring.

The meeting brought together key sports administrators and stakeholders from across the country to review existing policies and develop strategies for improved sports governance. The resolutions, the Council noted, reflect its commitment to elevating safety standards, promoting operational efficiency, and strengthening the national sports development framework.
