Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has provided an encouraging update on Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi ahead of the club’s final Premier League match of the season against Chelsea at the City Ground, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Awoniyi recently suffered a serious injury after colliding with the post during a match at the City Ground, resulting in a ruptured intestine.
He was immediately hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma.
The club later confirmed that the forward underwent successful surgery. Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Forest’s upcoming clash with West Ham United, Espírito Santo shared positive news regarding Awoniyi’s recovery.
“He had surgery and, thank God, it went well. He’s now under observation. We’re still waiting for the doctors to allow visits, but his family is with him. We are concerned, of course, but optimistic,” said the Forest boss.
“The information we have is that he’ll need at least five days of observation. Hopefully, all goes well, and next week he can rejoin the team and be around us again.”
“Believe me, he’s a wonderful boy. It’s been a very tough season for him, and we all feel deeply for him.”
Forest will host Chelsea in their final game of the campaign, and the club hopes Awoniyi will be fit enough to be part of the squad for the crucial encounter.
