Bafana Bafana Captain Cries Out Over Unpaid Allowances And Bonuses
Sampson Adedeji
The captain of South Africa’s home-based national team, Neo Maema, has publicly raised concerns over unpaid allowances and bonuses, eight months after the conclusion of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), BSNSports.com.ng reports.
South Africa was among the countries that participated in the CHAN tournament, which was hosted in August 2025 across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Speaking on Metro FM in South Africa, Maema accused the South African Football Association (SAFA), under the leadership of Danny Jordaan, of failing to fulfil financial obligations to the players despite repeated assurances.
“They haven’t paid. I’m the captain of the team and I can say authoritatively that they have not paid,” Maema said.
“The situation we are in right now, they’ve just been promising us.
"They got the money from CAF in October and promised to pay before December, but till now we haven’t seen anything.”
The development has sparked fresh concerns over players’ welfare and administrative accountability within South African football, with calls growing for SAFA to urgently resolve the issue and honour its commitments to the CHAN squad.
