The International Football Federation (FIFA) has sent a letter of congratulations to all the referees who officiated the qualifying play-off matches for the next edition of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, BSNSports com.ng reports.
Gassama Bakary, the Gambian referee who officiated the controversial world cup qualification between Cameroon and Algeria was among the referees who received the congratulatory message.
This is coming at a time when the Algerian Football Federation has sent a petition to FIFA requesting for the match to be replayed and Gassama sanctioned, FIFA has instead sent a letter to Gassama congratulating him for his professionalism.
This FIFA initiative logically excludes the possibility of rescheduling the match, even if the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has changed its strategy by seizing the FIFA Arbitration Committee.
Gassama officiated the return leg fixture of the 2022 World Cup Playoffs between Algeria and Cameroon in Blida which saw the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat in Douala to a 2-1 victory in Blida to book their place in Qatar 2022.
