Bayern Munich Coach Backs DR Congo For AFCON 2025, Plays Down Nigeria’s Chances
By Niyi Busari
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has tipped DR Congo as his preferred winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, playing down Nigeria’s prospects while underlining the importance of the tournament for African players, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking ahead of the continental showpiece, Kompany stressed Bayern Munich’s full support for players representing their countries at AFCON and explained that his backing of DR Congo is rooted in personal heritage.
“My father, Pierre, is Congolese and has invested in projects that provide education and safe accommodation for children living in poverty,” Kompany said. “Congo is part of my heritage, so I naturally support them in this tournament.”
AFCON 2025 is scheduled to kick off on December 21 in Morocco, with several Bayern players expected to join their national teams following the club’s Bundesliga fixture against Mainz.
Kompany confirmed that Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson will link up with his national side after that match, expressing hope that the forward enjoys a successful tournament.
“My information is that Jackson will leave with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations after the match against Mainz. We hope he goes as far as possible,” he said. “If Congo do not win, then I wish him all the best. For African players, the importance of this competition should never be underestimated.”
The Bayern coach also praised Jackson’s impact at club level despite limited playing time, highlighting his professionalism and efficiency.
“I have a very positive impression of Nicolas. He has helped us a lot his goals-per-minute ratio is good,” Kompany noted. “With Harry Kane leading the line, there is strong competition, but it’s a luxury problem. What many people don’t see is his work in training and his contribution every time he comes on. Hopefully, he continues to make the most of his opportunities.”
