Benfica Snap Up Falconets Forward Janet Akekoromowei

Portuguese champions Benfica have completed the signing of Falconets striker Janet Akekoromowei from Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) side Bayelsa Queens, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 18-year-old forward joins the Lisbon-based club after an impressive campaign in the Nigerian top flight, where she was named the NWFL's Most Valuable Player last season.

Akekoromowei had previously attracted interest from Spanish giants Barcelona, but a proposed move failed to materialise after she suffered an injury while on international duty in February.

The talented striker represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia, featuring in three matches for the Falconets during the tournament.

In addition to her exploits at youth level, Akekoromowei has also earned senior international caps for the Super Falcons, underlining her status as one of Nigeria's brightest emerging talents.

Her move to Benfica marks another significant milestone in her career as she begins her first spell in European football with the reigning Portuguese champions.
