Nigeria's Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has expressed his disappointment not to make the African Player of the Year award shortlist, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Boniface led Leverkusen to their first league title and DFB Pokal last season but he was unable to make it to the 2023 African Cup of Nations due to injury.

His absence from the African Cup was responsible for his omission from the list.

While speaking to BBC Sports, Boniface was disappointed, but he quickly braced up and made it clear that he was rooting for his compatriot Ademola Lookman to win it.

"Of course, I’m disappointed not to be shortlisted. If it’s what I did last season, I should be disappointed, but I don’t stress about it,” he told BBC.

When asked who he would pick if given the opportunity, he replied, “If I’m to pick the winner, it would be Lookman 100 percent, and if I were there, I would pick myself.”
