Breaking! Mascherano Resigns As Argentina U20 Coach
By Niyi Busari
Argentina U20 Coach, Javier Mascherano has tendered his resignation letter to the Argentina Football Association (AFA) after leading his boys to Round of 16 exit at the FIFA U20 World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng can report.
The Flying Eagles won 2-0 thanks to two second-half goals from Ibrahim Mohammed and Haliru Seriki, dampening the night and stunning a vocal home crowd that had gathered in large numbers to cheer on their national team. Nigeria, however, were more clinical in front of goal and harder to break down than their opponents and will go into the next round with confidence.
Mascherano while responding to questions after the match told Buenos Aires Times that he has tendered his resignation letter to the President of the Argentina Football Association, Claudio Tapia, he added that he would like to continue in the position if the president rejects his resignation letter.
"I have great relationship with AFA President, Claudio Tapia, and I will continue until he doesn't want me. He has my my resignation letter on his desk but my idea is to continue because I feel I am good enough for this role and as long as they believe the same I will be here.
Exit at the last 16 stage is a disappointment for Argentina. The country had performed well in the previous editions but they initially failed to qualify for this year's world cup. The side only earned a place at the last minute after FIFA withdrew hosting rights from Indonesia and awarded the tournament to Argentina.
Mascherano was under pressure going into the tournament following their failure to earn a qualification ticket.
