British High Commission Commends NSC, Team Nigeria After Glasgow Success

The British High Commission in Nigeria has commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Team Nigeria for their impressive performance at the just-concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, gave the commendation when the High Commission hosted members of Team Nigeria, including athletes, coaches and officials, in Abuja.

Nigeria emerged as the best-performing African nation at the Games and the only African country to finish in the top 10 of the overall medals table, placing seventh.

Montgomery described Nigeria as a key member of the Commonwealth family, saying Team Nigeria’s performance in Glasgow once again demonstrated the country’s sporting pedigree on the international stage.

“The Nigerian athletes did a fantastic job to make Nigeria proud, and we are also very proud of them, which is why we are celebrating them today,” he said.

He also commended the coaches and officials for their contributions to the team’s success and expressed optimism that the athletes would achieve even greater success on the global stage.

“I also want to thank your coaches and officials for the role they played in your feat in Glasgow, and we wish you all more global success. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Glasgow and cherish the friendships and memories you made during the Games,” Montgomery said.

The High Commissioner said Team Nigeria’s medal haul further demonstrated the country’s potential to compete successfully at the highest level of international sport.

“Team Nigeria showed its global stature once again at the Glasgow Games with all the medals it won, and we have no doubt that Nigeria has the potential to do even more,” he said.

Montgomery further pledged the High Commission’s willingness to deepen collaboration with the NSC as part of efforts to support the transformation of Nigerian sports.

“From the High Commission here in Abuja, we are even more enthused to collaborate and partner with the National Sports Commission in every positive way to further strengthen the ongoing transformation of Nigerian sports,” he stated.

Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, in his remarks, appreciated the British High Commission for its support to Team Nigeria in the build-up to the Games.

Dikko specifically acknowledged the Commission’s assistance with the prompt processing and issuance of visas, as well as other diplomatic support extended to athletes, officials and supporters.

“We commend Glasgow and the people of Scotland for being excellent hosts. The reception further demonstrated the enduring friendship and growing collaboration between the governments and peoples of Nigeria and the United Kingdom,” Dikko said.

He described Team Nigeria’s performance at the Games as highly successful, noting that the country won 10 gold medals and finished seventh overall.

“Out of the entire 22 gold medals won by the African continent, 10 were won by Nigeria. Nigeria also set three of the six world records that were set at the Games,” he said.

According to Dikko, the Glasgow Games provided Nigerian athletes with a valuable international platform to compete against some of the world’s best athletes and constituted an important part of the country’s preparations for future major competitions, particularly the Olympic Games.

“These successes clearly validate the progress in Nigerian sports, driven by the bold and decisive transformational reforms of Mr President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” he said.

The NSC chairman also called for the support of the British High Commission in Nigeria’s bid to host the 2034 Commonwealth Games, as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a major destination for international sporting events.
