Bukayo Saka Credits Parents’ Nigerian Upbringing for His Core Values

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has once again highlighted the strong influence of his Nigerian heritage, crediting his upbringing for instilling key values that continue to guide him both personally and professionally, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

The 24-year-old spoke about his cultural foundation in a recent interview with the BBC, according to a report by All Nigeria Soccer.

Though born and raised in England, Saka grew up in a household steeped in Nigerian traditions. His parents, who spent their early years in Nigeria before relocating to the United Kingdom, played a central role in shaping his character and sense of identity. “My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it,” he said.

“Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”

Despite being eligible to represent Nigeria, Saka committed his international future to England after progressing through their youth teams. Nonetheless, he has remained strongly connected to his parents’ homeland through outreach initiatives and philanthropic engagements.

Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Saka partnered with children’s charity BigShoe to support underprivileged communities in Kano, funding surgeries for 120 children battling medical conditions such as hernias and brain tumours. The effort underscored his commitment to giving back and supporting health-focused interventions in Nigeria.

His ties were further highlighted in June 2023, when Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted him at the State House in Marina, commending his achievements and continued connection to Nigeria.

Saka remains a pivotal figure for Arsenal, and on Sunday he captained the Gunners in their Premier League derby against Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium, reflecting his growing leadership role at the club.
