Burkina Faso 4-1 Nigeria: Flying Eagles Miss 2027 U-20 AFCON and World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been eliminated from the race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The WAFU Zone B final carried significant importance, with the winner earning the region’s qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which will determine Africa’s representatives at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Burkina Faso seized control of the final from the outset, scoring three goals inside the opening 15 minutes to put Nigeria on the back foot.

The Flying Eagles struggled to cope with the Young Stallions’ attacking intensity and went into the break facing a significant deficit.

Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side attempted to mount a comeback after the restart but could not find the response needed to overturn the early setback.

Burkina Faso added a fourth goal before Nigeria pulled one back, but the consolation was not enough to prevent a comprehensive defeat.

The loss was particularly disappointing for Nigeria, having already suffered a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso during the group stage.

The Flying Eagles had hoped to avenge that earlier loss in the final, but the Young Stallions once again proved superior when the stakes were highest.

Nigeria reached the final after a dramatic semi-final against hosts Côte d’Ivoire. The match ended 2-2 after regulation time before the Flying Eagles prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten run with a 2-0 semi-final victory over Niger.

The Young Stallions completed an impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria 4-1 to lift the WAFU Zone B title and secure qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.

For Nigeria, the defeat represents a major setback. The seven-time U-20 AFCON champions will miss the 2027 continental tournament and, consequently, the opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup through the competition.
