CAF: Confederation Cup Winner Set To Play In FIFA Club World Cup

The winner of the CAF Confederation Cup is set to feature in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup following the increase in the number of participating teams to 48, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

FIFA on Thursday approved the expansion of the global club tournament from 36 to 48 teams, a move that will take effect from the 2029 edition. 

With the new structure, Africa’s allocation has been increased to seven representatives.

As part of the revised format, the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup will now be considered among Africa’s representatives at the FIFA Club World Cup, giving the continent’s second-tier club competition a direct pathway to the global stage.

The development is expected to boost the profile and competitiveness of the CAF Confederation Cup, as participating clubs will now have the opportunity to compete against some of the world’s elite teams.

Africa’s seven slots are expected to include winners of the continent’s major club competitions alongside other top-performing teams based on FIFA and CAF criteria.

The expansion is aimed at enhancing global representation and increasing commercial value, with more clubs from different confederations gaining access to the prestigious tournament.
