The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced plans to introduce the African Nations League, a new continental competition set to begin after 2027, BS sports.com.ng reports

CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, confirmed the development, describing it as a major step forward in the evolution of African football.

The tournament will be structured in a format similar to Europe’s UEFA Nations League, with the aim of providing more competitive and meaningful matches for national teams across the continent.

According to CAF, the African Nations League is designed to ensure regular high-level fixtures, reducing the number of low-stakes international games while raising overall standards of competition.

The initiative is also expected to enhance player development, improve team rankings, and better prepare African nations for major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

Beyond the sporting benefits, the competition is projected to significantly increase the commercial value of African football.

CAF believes the Nations League will attract stronger broadcast deals, sponsorship opportunities, and greater global visibility for the continent’s national teams.

The announcement represents a bold and transformative move by CAF, signaling its commitment to modernizing African football and aligning it with global best practices.

Further details on the competition’s format, scheduling, and qualification process are expected to be released in due course.
