CAF Applauds Oshoala's Lasting Legacy In WAFCON History

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has paid tribute to Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala for her remarkable contributions to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as the continent gears up for the 2024 edition in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Oshoala, now set for her fifth WAFCON appearance, first graced the tournament in 2014 when she helped Nigeria lift the trophy in Namibia.

“While Nigeria's name was already synonymous with success at WAFCON, 2014 marked the arrival of a new star a 20-year-old forward who left an unforgettable imprint on the competition hosted in Namibia,” CAF stated in its build-up to Morocco 2024.

That tournament marked Oshoala's breakout moment. Leading the attack for the Super Falcons, she scored four goals, delivered crucial assists, and was instrumental in Nigeria’s march to the title.

The Super Falcons defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the final to claim their seventh WAFCON crown, with Oshoala crowned Player of the Tournament.

Now 30, Oshoala has become the face of African women’s football. She holds a record six CAF Women’s Player of the Year awards (2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023)—a feat unmatched on the continent.

The Bay FC striker has scored 37 goals in 61 international appearances and boasts three WAFCON titles with the Super Falcons, further cementing her legacy as one of Africa's greatest football icons.
