The 2025/26 CAF Champions League begins this Friday with the preliminary round, marking the start of what promises to be a landmark season in African club football. A record 62 clubs from across the continent have registered for this edition, highlighting the growing appeal and competitiveness of Africa’s premier club competition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

This season also introduces a significant financial reform aimed at supporting clubs in the early stages of the tournament. In a first for the competition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will provide $100,000 in financial support to clubs eliminated in the first and second preliminary rounds. The initiative is designed to alleviate logistical costs and promote wider participation across all CAF member nations.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said the initiative reflects the organization’s broader commitment to strengthening football infrastructure and ensuring financial sustainability at all levels of the game in Africa.

The official draw, held last month in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has already set the stage for exciting matchups. RS Berkane, Moroccan league champions and 2025 CAF Confederation Cup winners, will face ASC Kara of Togo. Orlando Pirates, who reached the semi-finals last season, take on Lioli FC of Lesotho, while Power Dynamos of Zambia meet Ivorian giants Asec Mimosas in one of the round’s most anticipated ties.

With increased club representation, enhanced financial backing, and an expanded competitive field, the 2025/26 CAF Champions League is poised to be one of the most dynamic and inclusive editions in the tournament’s history.
