CAF Commences Referees Reform – Motsepe Confirms

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that the continental football body has commenced a wide-ranging reform of refereeing across Africa, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Refereeing standards have come under intense scrutiny following a series of controversial decisions at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, prompting calls for urgent intervention to restore credibility and consistency in officiating.

Speaking during a visit to Senegal on Wednesday, Motsepe revealed that CAF has already set the reform process in motion, emphasizing the need to align African refereeing with global best practices.

“Our ambition is also to support referees in their decision-making, ensuring they meet the demands of modern football,” Motsepe stated.

“The reforms initiated will help to resolve existing difficulties. We are convinced that these reforms will allow African football to regain its full competitiveness on a global scale. We advocate zero tolerance for corruption, so that the 54 African nations can operate in a healthy and fair environment.”

The initiative is expected to focus on improving training, enhancing the use of technology, and strengthening oversight mechanisms, as CAF aims to rebuild trust in officiating across its competitions.
