CAF Considers VAR From Group Stage In Champions League, Confederation Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is holding extensive discussions over a possible expansion of the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in its two major club competitions, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The proposed plan would see VAR introduced from the group stage through to the final of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Currently, VAR is only deployed from the quarter-final stage onwards in the competitions. However, no final decision has been reached on the proposed change, with discussions still ongoing within CAF.

The deliberations are being led under the administration of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, as the continental football governing body continues efforts to improve refereeing standards and enhance the accuracy of key decisions across its club competitions.

If approved, the proposed expansion would represent a significant increase in the use of technology in African club football, particularly during the group stages where VAR is currently unavailable.
