The Confederation of African Football has formally instructed Kenya to pay a $30 million hosting commitment fee as confirmation of its readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The directive introduces fresh uncertainty over Kenya’s participation in the tournament’s hosting arrangements, with CAF warning that failure to meet the financial obligation could put the country’s role at risk and potentially affect broader preparations for the competition.

Kenya is part of a landmark joint bid with regional partners to stage the 2027 edition, marking a significant moment for East African football. However, CAF’s latest move underscores a more stringent approach to ensuring that host nations fulfill financial and organizational requirements well in advance of the tournament.

Confirming the development, Kenya’s Sports Principal Secretary, Elijah Mwangi, acknowledged the urgency of the situation and indicated that steps are being taken to address the governing body’s demand.
