The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered the Senegal national football team to return the Africa Cup of Nations trophy to its headquarters in Cairo, following a dramatic ruling by its Appeal Committee, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The CAF Appeal Committee on Monday officially stripped Senegal of the AFCON title after the team walked off the pitch during the final against Morocco national football team in protest over controversial refereeing decisions.
Invoking the relevant provisions of the competition regulations, CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the match, with the result awarded in favour of Morocco.
In the aftermath of the decision, scenes of celebration erupted across major cities in Morocco, as fans poured into the streets to mark what is now being recognized as a historic triumph for the Atlas Lions.
The ruling brings a decisive end to one of the most contentious finals in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, with CAF reaffirming its stance on discipline and adherence to competition rules.
