The fallout from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has escalated into one of the most contentious episodes in recent African football history, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) now facing mounting scrutiny over its handling of the tournament’s aftermath, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Staged in Morocco and concluded in January 2026, the competition was expected to showcase the continent’s footballing progress. Instead, it has descended into a protracted dispute involving the final result, disciplinary rulings, and individual awards.

The final, held in Rabat, saw Senegal face the host nation. After a tense and physical contest, the match remained goalless at the end of regulation time. The pivotal moment came late, when a VAR review resulted in a penalty being awarded to Morocco.

Senegal’s players briefly left the pitch in protest, with the interruption lasting approximately 15 minutes before play resumed. Morocco ultimately failed to convert the penalty, a miss that proved decisive.

In extra time, Senegal broke the deadlock, securing a 1–0 victory and lifting the trophy on the night. Sadio Mané was subsequently named Player of the Tournament, while Morocco claimed other individual honours, including the Golden Boot and Golden Glove.

At the time, the outcome appeared settled. However, the situation took a dramatic turn in March when Confederation of African Football ruled that Senegal’s temporary walk-off constituted a breach of regulations amounting to forfeiture.

In a decision that stunned the football community, CAF reassigned the tournament title to Morocco.

Senegalese officials strongly rejected the ruling, describing it as “unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” and signalling their intention to challenge the decision through legal channels.

The controversy has since deepened further, with reports indicating that CAF has requested that Mané return his Player of the Tournament award, with plans to reassign it to Brahim Díaz.

Mané is said to have refused, maintaining that the award rightfully belongs to him and remains in Senegal. The Senegalese federation is also reportedly preparing a formal legal response as tensions continue to rise.

The unfolding dispute has raised broader concerns about governance and credibility within African football. What began as a dramatic final has evolved into a wider debate over regulatory consistency, institutional authority, and trust in CAF’s decision-making processes.

With the possibility of legal arbitration looming, the final resolution of the AFCON 2025 saga remains uncertain. For now, the controversy shows little sign of subsiding.
