The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially opened investigations into the ugly scenes that followed the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash between Algeria and Nigeria on Saturday night, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a statement released on Sunday, CAF confirmed that Algerian players and members of the technical crew confronted match officials immediately after the final whistle.

The situation reportedly escalated as some members of the Algerian contingent followed the referees into the tunnel, an act CAF described as “unacceptable” and in clear violation of the competition’s disciplinary regulations.

CAF also disclosed that it is reviewing reports of clashes involving journalists and other media personnel in the aftermath of the encounter, as tensions spilled beyond the field of play.

The Algeria vs Nigeria fixture, played in Marrakech, ended in a 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles, a result that sparked intense reactions from the Algerian camp.

The Confederation assured that all available match reports, referee submissions, and video evidence will be carefully examined as part of the investigation process.

CAF further stated that appropriate disciplinary measures will be announced once the investigations are concluded.

The development adds to the growing controversies surrounding the high-stakes quarterfinal, as AFCON 2025 heads into its decisive stages.
