The 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations, originally scheduled for April in Morocco, has been postponed to October 12–21, according to confirmation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The decision was not accompanied by a formal public announcement, instead being communicated through internal channels—a move that has drawn criticism from stakeholders across the continent.

The delay adds to a pattern of scheduling disruptions affecting CAF competitions, including the recent postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Reports indicate that national teams were informed of the change while already in advanced stages of preparation, forcing last-minute adjustments to training programs and logistics.

Journalist Romain Molina had previously suggested the possibility of a postponement and later stated that CAF notified participating teams mid-preparation. He criticized the governing body’s approach, citing a lack of consideration for players and national federations.

Further reporting by Sport News Africa indicates that the decision was conveyed via an internal memo rather than a public statement, leaving several federations caught off guard.

Morocco Maintains Role as Host

Morocco was awarded hosting rights for the tournament in December 2025 after no other bids were submitted. The country has increasingly positioned itself as a key hub for African futsal, having hosted the 2020 and 2024 editions of the tournament—both won by the Atlas Lions—as well as the 2025 Women’s Futsal AFCON, won by the Atlas Lionesses.

The upcoming edition is expected to take place in Rabat, reinforcing Morocco’s central role in the sport’s continental development.

Criticism Over Governance and Planning

CAF’s handling of the postponement has renewed scrutiny of its organizational practices, particularly regarding transparency and communication. Teams preparing for the competition have faced uncertainty, highlighting ongoing concerns about administrative efficiency within the governing body.

Despite the disruption, Morocco remains committed to hosting the tournament later this year. The Atlas Lions are expected to defend their title on home soil, while participating nations recalibrate their preparations ahead of the revised schedule.

The postponement adds to a growing list of logistical challenges facing CAF competitions, raising broader questions about planning and governance. Attention now turns to October, when the tournament is expected to proceed in the Moroccan capital.
