CAF Re-opens Bid For AFCON 2025 Hosting Rights

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) Executive Committee met on Saturday 1 October 2022 in Algiers, Algeria and announced the re-opening of bids for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2025. 

The African football ruling body stripped Guinea of the right host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, known as AFCON. President of CAF, Patrice Motsepe, travelled to Conakry on Friday for discussions with interim president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya but could not guarantee their readiness to host Africans.

Other African countries including Nigeria who wish to host the African Nations Cup in 2025 can now submit their bids. Côte d'Ivoire will host the biggest African football championship in 2023.

AFCON is a biennial competition organised by CAF for African countries. In 2013, the tournament format was switched to being held in odd-numbered years so that it wouldn't interfere with the FIFA World Cup.

Senegal are the tournament's current champions, having beaten Egypt on penalties in the 2021 final.
