The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has outlined key match regulations ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff encounter with Gabon, providing clarity on procedures for the high-stakes showdown, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The one-legged fixture, which will determine which nation advances to the next stage, will adhere to several competition-specific rules designed to ensure fairness and consistency.

Below are the confirmed guidelines released by CAF:

1. Extra Time if Scores Are Level

If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time will be played to determine a winner.

2. Penalty Shootout if Still Tied

Should neither team prevail in extra time, the contest will proceed to a penalty shootout to decide who advances.

3. Five Substitutions in Regulation Time

Each side is permitted to make up to five substitutions during regular play, allowing coaches to manage fatigue and adjust tactics as needed.

4. One Additional Substitution in Extra Time

A sixth substitution will be allowed during extra time to provide additional flexibility given the increased physical demands.

5. VAR to Be Utilized

CAF confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be in operation for the match. VAR will assist officials in reviewing major incidents involving goals, penalties, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Panthers of Gabon will face off in what promises to be a fiercely contested battle for a place in the next stage of the qualification process.
