CAF Sanctions: Algeria Heads To Appeals Committee, CAS

Sampson Adedeji

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed it will challenge the recent sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the disciplinary rulings arising from Algeria’s clash with Nigeria, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

CAF’s Disciplinary Committee had fined Algeria $100,000 and handed suspensions to two Algerian players for misconduct during the match against the Super Eagles.

The decision has sparked strong reactions within Algerian football circles, prompting the federation to seek redress through CAF’s Appeals Committee.

According to sources close to the matter, the Appeals Committee has two options before it: to review the disciplinary decisions and adjust them in line with the relevant legal provisions, or to uphold the sanctions as originally issued by the Disciplinary Committee.

Should the Appeals Committee choose to maintain the ruling, the Algerian Football Federation is expected to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This would mark another legal confrontation between FAF and CAF, similar to the high-profile case involving USM Alger and RS Berkane of Morocco.

The outcome of the appeal process is expected to have significant implications, not only for Algeria but also for CAF’s disciplinary framework and the enforcement of regulations across African football.
