CAF Secretary-General Succession: Nigerian Candidate Emerges Amid North African Resistance

Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu is emerging as the leading candidate to replace Véron Mosengo-Omba as Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

CAF is currently dealing with internal tensions following controversies surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and the leadership of the organisation is set for changes in the coming months.

Adamu, who currently serves as CAF’s Head of Competitions, is widely regarded as the favourite for the role due to his experience and professionalism. His profile has reportedly gained significant backing among members of the CAF Executive Committee.

However, his potential appointment has not received unanimous support, particularly from North African federations, which have had strained relations with him in recent years. Sources indicate that countries such as Egypt and Morocco remain influential voices within CAF and are not enthusiastic about his possible promotion.

The situation follows growing dissatisfaction within CAF over the leadership style of Mosengo-Omba. The Executive Committee recently moved against extending his tenure, despite earlier indications from CAF president Patrice Motsepe that he could remain in office for another year.

The debate intensified after Samir Sobha, president of the Mauritian Football Federation, reportedly insisted that CAF statutes be respected, noting that Mosengo-Omba had exceeded the age limit for the position on October 15.

Mosengo-Omba has also faced criticism for several administrative decisions taken without the approval of the Executive Committee. 

Among them was the promotion of Cédrick Aghey to head CAF’s legal department, as well as the dismissal of Yassin Osman Robleh, who headed the confederation’s judicial bodies and was widely praised internally for his professionalism.

The decision to remove Robleh reportedly shocked several members of the Executive Committee, prompting Augustin Senghor to seek a meeting with Motsepe to address the issue.

Mosengo-Omba is now expected to step down as he prepares to run for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation. Despite this, reports suggest he has continued to restructure departments within CAF by appointing allies to key positions.

While the matter is expected to be discussed at the next CAF Executive Committee meeting, attention has already turned to who will succeed him. Although Adamu remains the leading contender, opposition from North African federations highlights the long-standing political divide within African football between North African and sub-Saharan blocs.

The development adds another layer of complexity to governance issues within CAF as the confederation seeks stability and stronger leadership moving forward.
