Sampson Adedeji

The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football has concluded plans to increase the number of clubs participating in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to reports emerging from Cairo, the proposed expansion is expected to take effect from the 2027/2028 football season as part of CAF's efforts to further develop club football across the continent.

The move is aimed at providing more clubs from member associations the opportunity to compete on the continental stage, while also enhancing the competitiveness and commercial appeal of both competitions.

Although the exact number of additional slots and the qualification format are yet to be officially announced, discussions within CAF's leadership have reportedly been concluded, with implementation plans already in place.

The expansion is expected to benefit several African leagues by increasing representation in continental tournaments and creating more opportunities for clubs to gain international exposure.

An official announcement detailing the new format and participation criteria is expected from CAF in the coming months.
