The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will go head-to-head with South Africa in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025, as both nations continue their pursuit of continental success after qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Nigeria reached the semi-final stage after a goalless draw against Senegal that ended in a 3-1 penalty shootout win. Head coach Aliyu Zubairu’s squad impressed with their discipline and mental strength, particularly goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, who saved two penalties to secure the win. Defensive contributions from Daniel Bameyi, Divine Oliseh, and Sulyman Alabi played a major role and will be vital again as they take on a well-prepared South African team.

South Africa’s semi-final berth came courtesy of a dramatic extra-time victory over DR Congo. Thabang Mahlangu scored the decisive goal in the 109th minute following an assist from Shakeel April. Amajita’s solid midfield and defensive performance, anchored by Jules Ahoka and Samuel Ntanda, helped them maintain control under pressure.

Both teams have shown strong work ethic and defensive stability, but neither has been particularly prolific in open play. Nigeria will rely on Precious Benjamin and Emmanuel Chukwu for attacking breakthroughs, while South Africa may once again turn to Mahlangu to deliver when it matters most.

The semi-final is expected to be tightly contested, with set-piece opportunities and bench contributions likely to influence the outcome. Nigeria’s flexibility and mental toughness—evident in their victory over Senegal—could give them a slight edge.

As the two nations prepare for a high-stakes clash, Nigeria will look to enhance their storied U-20 AFCON legacy, while South Africa seeks to carve out a significant achievement of their own. The encounter is shaping up to be a tense and evenly matched contest.

Winners from the match will face winners in second semifinal fixture between Morroco and hosts Egypt on Sunday.

Venue, Date and Kickoff Time:

The match will take place at Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia on Thursday, May 15, at exactly 4 PM (Nigerian Time) and 6:00 pm local time.
