CAFCC: Djoliba Ends Abia Warriors’ Hope
Sampson Adedeji
Abia Warriors’ maiden campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup has come to an end following a narrow defeat to Malian giants Djoliba, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Umuahia-based side, who earned a historic ticket to the continent after finishing third in the Nigeria Premier Football League last season, went into the tie hopeful of advancing beyond the preliminary stages.
In the first leg played in Nigeria, Abia Warriors were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw despite dominating much of the contest. That result left them with everything to do in the return leg in Bamako.
On Saturday, however, Djoliba proved the stronger side, edging out the debutants with a slim 1-0 victory in front of their home fans.
The solitary goal sealed a 2-1 aggregate win for the Malians, effectively ending Abia Warriors’ dream of progressing to the next round.
Despite the exit, the Nigerian side earned plaudits for their fighting spirit and promising debut on the continental stage, and will now shift focus back to domestic competitions.
