CAFCL: Crisis Rocking DR Congo Football Reach New Heights, As Rivers United Opponent Remains Unknown

With just weeks to the kickoff of the preliminary round of the 2025/2026 CAF Champions League, the crisis rocking football in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached a new height, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The uncertainty surrounding which clubs will represent DR Congo in this year’s CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup has thrown the nation’s football into disarray.

While Congolese giants are eager to participate, the ongoing tussle within their football administration has left the situation unresolved.

Reports suggest that some senior football officials are even pushing for DR Congo clubs to be excluded entirely from this year’s continental competitions if the deadlock continues.

Although clubs were initially able to register players for the preliminary round, CAF has now officially closed the Competitions Management System (CMS) for all DR Congo clubs further complicating matters.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s representative Rivers United, who were drawn against a DR Congo side in the first preliminary round, remain in the dark as to who their actual opponent will be.
