Sampson Adedeji
It was a day to forget for Nigeria’s Rivers United as they fell 1-2 to Moroccan giants RS Berkane in their second group game of the CAF Champions League at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, BSNSports.com.ng reports
Despite a spirited performance, the Port Harcourt side failed to convert their dominance into victory and were punished late in the encounter.
Rivers United got ahead eight minutes before halftime when Berkane midfielder Mamadou Camara mistakenly diverted the ball into his own net following a dangerous delivery into the box, giving the home supporters something to cheer.
The hosts maintained their advantage for most of the second half, defending with discipline and pushing for a second goal, but the visitors refused to give up.
With seven minutes added at the end of regulation time, Youness El Kaabi stunned the home crowd by firing in the equaliser in the 97th minute.
Just a minute later, Mounir Chouiar completed a dramatic turnaround for Berkane, slotting home the winner and leaving Rivers United shell-shocked.
The result leaves Rivers United still searching for their first win in the group stage after suffering back-to-back defeats.
The Nigerian representatives will now look to regroup ahead of their next fixture as qualification hopes remain slim but still alive.
