CHAN 2024: CAF Sanctions Kenya Over Security Lapses

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed strict sanctions on Kenya, one of the co-hosts of CHAN 2025, following repeated security failures at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The decisive action came after the Kenya–Morocco group match on Sunday, August 10, which nearly ended in tragedy.

The game was marred by chaotic scenes at the stadium gates, including crowd surges, jostling, the use of tear gas, and forced entry through barriers.

Several fans were injured and left without immediate medical attention.

CAF described the incidents as “unacceptable,” especially since the Local Organizing Committee had already been warned multiple times about security shortcomings.

In its statement, CAF announced several measures to safeguard spectators and preserve the competition’s integrity.

Stadium capacity will be reduced to 60% about 27,000 seats with entry strictly limited to holders of electronic tickets; paper tickets are now banned.

Security protocols will also be overhauled, including tighter screening and reinforced control of sensitive zones.

CAF further warned that if Kenya fails to comply with the new guidelines, it may relocate scheduled matches to alternative venues.

Such a move would deal a major blow to the country’s image as a tournament host, which is already under scrutiny.
